THE people of Holmes Chapel last night came together to pay their respects to those who lost their lives in the Manchester attack.

Hundreds of residents of all ages joined together to walk through the village, reflecting on Monday's attack at the Manchester Arena and the 22 victims, including Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School student Nell Jones, 14.

The school has opened up books of condolence, with dozens of floral tributes also placed outside at the entrance.

A HCCS teacher, Amy Ware, says she organised 'A Walk for Manchester' to give students a way to come together, and as word spread people from across the village and beyond decided to join in.

Amy said: "I was sat at home and we didn't know the situation. I got the phone call they told me that Nell hadn't made it but Freya had.

"I have worked here for two years now. I'm a cover teacher so I have the kids quite often, and I taught Nell a few weeks ago.

"When I got off the phone I just couldn't keep myself together. I know how close the school is, I have been here and seen them grow up. It has been really difficult.

"I came in the next day and sat with loads of the kids, and I realised that lots of them didn't know what to say.

"I thought 'I want to do something', and considering the situation I thought a walk would be a really nice way for people to walk and chat, or just collect their thoughts in silence.

"I didn't expect for it to become this big, it's amazing. I'm heartwarmed and heartbroken at the fact that it's because of such a horrible thing.

"I think the community has been amazing and the reaaction has been really really lovely.

"A huge thank you to everybody."

The walk began at the school, looping through the centre of the village via St Luke's Church, where candles were lit.

At the end of the walk, back at HCCS, a minute's silence was held before balloons were released in memory of those killed.

The school is offering support to students and staff in the wake of the tragedy.

Nell had attended the Ariana Grande concert with her friend and fellow HCCS student Freya Lewis, who is recovering in hospital following extensive surgery.
