A GREEN Flag assessment has taken place at the main line canals between Wardle Lock and Audlem.

Organised by the Middlewich Branch and Shropshire Union, judges from the Green Flag Awards assessed the quality of green and open space along the canal on May 11.

Graham Russell, SUMBA organiser, said: “I would like to think all the volunteers that come and help consistently, without them none of this work could be completed.

“We had a fantastic assessment and it really is testament to the hard work of everyone that we’ve got to this stage.

“A while ago the green space around the canals, including Middlewich wasn’t as well kept, so I’d like to think we’ve done our bit to improve it.

“If we get a good response from Green Flag then I would be absolutely delighted.

The Green Flag Award scheme rewards well managed parks and green spaces and sets the benchmark standard for the management of recreational spaces across the UK.

Purposes of the award include ensuring everybody has access to quality green and open spaces whilst also recognising the work of volunteers.
