A SHOPLIFTER who targeted Knutsford town centre has been sent to prison.

Peter Russell Robson, 56 of Woodlands Drive, Knutsford, was arrested on Tuesday, April 25 after spirits worth £228.90 were stolen from a town centre shop.

Police say they were already seeking to trace Robson in relation to a similar offence committed at the same store three days earlier.

Robson pleaded guilty at South and East Cheshire Magistrates court on April 26, and was sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment. He was also ordered to pay £115 surcharge.

PC Mike Dawber, Knutsford beat officer, said: “Figures released by the Association of Convenience Stores show that crime against convenience shops in the UK cost an estimated £232 million last year.

"Hopefully, the prison sentence will deter other people committing these offences in Knutsford town centre."
