THE Heritage Lottery Fund has given St Michael’s Church £7,700 for a venables screen conservation project.

With the help of Middlewich Heritage Trust, the project focuses on two oak screens painted with heraldic shields that date back to the 13th century.

The screens were commissioned by the Baron of Kinderton in 1632 and eventually placed in the bell tower in 1850, where they are today.

The project will allow for a conservation management plan to be produced which is required before any restoration work on the screens begins.

Simon Drew, rector of St Michael and All Angels, said: We are most grateful to the trust and to Kerry Fletcher for leading this important piece of work.

“The restoration of the church building for the people of Middlewich is a huge project, and involvement from other parts of our community is very welcome.”

The trust is looking for volunteers, to get involved with professionals in the project to gain a deeper insight into this previously under-researched part of their history.
