VOLUNTEERS have been spreading the word ahead of a landmark vote in Holmes Chapel next week.

A referendum asking Holmes Chapel residents whether the borough council should adopt a neighbourhood plan for the village will take place on Thursday, March 9.

A steering team has put together a neighbourhood plan which, if adopted, would help mould future development.

The plan needs to be backed by more than 50 per cent of voters in Thursday’s referendum, at which stage Cheshire East Council would be required to adopt it as soon as is reasonably practical.

Brian Bath, Neighbourhood Plan Team chairman, said: “We need to ensure we get as many residents to vote as possible.

“The teams of volunteers and parish councillors will be out and about up to polling day, answering villagers’ questions and ensuring that we provide as much information as needed.

“We have a plan to be proud of and it provides an excellent guide to how the people of the village, parish councillors, community representatives and the many volunteers see their vision for the village in the longer term.

“March 9 2017 – referendum day – will be a critical event in the life of Holmes Chapel.

“All residents will have the opportunity to take control of the future development of the village by voting for the Holmes Chapel neighbourhood plan. The more people who vote the better and a large vote in favour of the neighbourhood plan will send out a strong message that the plan represents the will of the people of the village.

“If anyone needs assistance in getting to a polling station on the day, please let us know at the Holmes Chapel parish office in Church Walk.”

The plan lays out a blueprint through to 2030, and will be a reference point against future applications for development in Holmes Chapel. It offers residents and community groups the chance to influence and shape the area.
