A MIDDLEWICH town councillor was targeted by vandals over the weekend.

Independent Cllr David Latham, who has led the fight against Cheshire East Council’s Cledford Lane waste transfer station, had cooking fat thrown over his van and driveway in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Cllr Latham says he has been subject to further petty acts in recent months, such as the smashing of wing mirrors on his work van, but sees this as more of a pre-meditated attack and has informed the police.

“It’s not the first time I have had my van targeted. We thought it was petty theft and put it down to people being people, but the police think this is a bit more.

“I make myself very open and accessible as I possibly can and clearly I have upset somebody. These people need to come and speak to me rather than do something like this. There have been nice comments and quite a bit of support for me since.

“It won’t deter me from being who I am, being outspoken or running with things. I will continue to do what I am doing.

“I implore them to come and speak to me rather than carry out senseless acts of vandalism.”

The attack comes less than a year after Cllr Ken Kingston – town mayor at the time – was targeted in a similar incident whereby paint was thrown at his van and property.
