A MIDDLEWICH man whose friend was run over and killed at a dangerous junction is calling for a long-standing street light issue in the area to be fixed.

Michael Dean, 69, says a street light at the Brooks Lane bridge junction of Lewin Street – where his friend was hit by a car many years ago – has been out since March when it was replaced with a new LED bulb.

Despite being a one-way bridge leading from Booth Lane to Brooks Lane, motorists often travel the wrong way over it. Larger vehicles have in the past become stuck, leaving the bridge in need of repair.

After contacting Middlewich Town Council and Cheshire East Council, the latter being responsible for street lighting, Mr Dean says the light remains unrepaired.

He said: “It’s so frustrating, because it’s a big junction.

"Years ago, a friend of mine got knocked down and killed there. He was a real close friend.

“It’s just not being done – it’s a bad junction and you get people coming over the wrong way even though there are signs telling you not to.

"It’s scary and it’s dangerous.

“We have just had our lights changed before Christmas, but this one is still not working.

“I have been reporting it to Cheshire East Council since last March.

"It’s at the junction of Lewin Street and Brooks Lane Bridge and they keep fobbing me off, telling me it’s been logged and should be fixed, but it still hasn’t been.

“It’s one of the new LEDs in Lewin Street.

"I phone them up every month but nothing is happening.”

The issue is currently logged on Cheshire East Council’s website, with the last action marked as ‘enquiry received’ on October 25 of this year.

The council’s Highways team aim to respond to such issues within 20 working days.

A response reads: “We have logged your enquiry and assigned it to a member of our team. The Light Out will be assessed and any necessary action taken.”

On a map of the borough’s street lights, the reported light is highlighted in green, meaning there is no known fault.

At the recent Middlewich Town Council meetings, councillors voted unanimously to back a potential footbridge from Booth Lane into Brooks Lane.
