CHESHIRE East Council is offering advice to residents on how to deal with scams this winter.
The latest in a series of winter advice tips, the council says that millions of UK residents fall victim to scammers each year, to the tune of £5 billion.
While older and vulnerable adults are more at risk, anyone can be targeted through the post, online, by phone and text or face to face by rogue traders.
The council reminds residents that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is, and to be suspicious if you are contacted out of the blue.
Never give out personal details or send money to someone you have never met, and take your time in making a decision on a purchase. You should never have to pay upfront to claim a prize.
Councillor Paul Bates, cabinet member for communities and health, said: “During winter, some of our residents might find themselves feeling more vulnerable and isolated. Sadly, it’s vulnerability that bogus callers and rogue tradesmen prey upon.
“That’s why the council is urging residents to be wary of unexpected callers and appealing for people to speak out about scams.
“If you have an elderly or vulnerable neighbour, friend or relative then please check in on them and make sure they are aware of what to look out for. If you suspect they may have fallen victim to a scam, don’t hesitate to report it.”
