A TEAM of Middlewich volunteers has sent letters to more than 900 speeding drivers this year, latest figures reveal.

Middlewich Speed Watch, comprised of PCSO Dave Jinks and a group of residents, monitor speeding hotspots with a self-funded speed gun and warn drivers who break the limit.

Although the group has no legal powers, the data is passed onto Cheshire Police, and long-term member Cllr Jonathan Parry believes the letters are being well-received.

Cllr Parry said: “I am shocked but at the same time not too surprised, because I walk around Middlewich a lot and I see the speeds people are going at.

“You can spend an hour with the speed gun and get 20, 30, even 50 people speeding on one road.

“I have definitely noticed a change. It is not as bad as when we started and we have noticed a general reduction in speeds.”

The group has only had to distribute a handful of second letters to the same drivers.

Cllr Parry identifies Booth Lane, Croxton Lane, Chester Road and St Michaels Way as key problem areas, and says one driver was caught speeding twice in one day in Warmingham Lane.

“Even one speeder is one too many, and schemes like this are so important for smaller towns.

“It is way too many, especially for a town like Middlewich.

“Dave Jinks’ work on this has been absolutely commendable. He has gone above and beyond and is a massively valuable asset to the town.”
