MIDDLEWICH High School has earned praise in the House of Commons for the “impressive” support it offers to its pupils and their families.

Fiona Bruce MP referenced the King Edward Street school’s achievements in a question posed to Prime Minister Theresa May during a Prime Minister’s Questions session on October 12.

The school offers dedicated support to students through the Emotionally Healthy Schools scheme, a Cheshire East Council funded initiative for which Middlewich High School was the pioneer.

Mrs Bruce said: “At Middlewich High School in my constituency, the most vulnerable pupils and their families are impressively supported, pursuant to the school’s motto of “Achievement for All”.

“Will the Prime Minister confirm that under her plans for education, and in a country that works for everyone, parents can be assured that there will be the right school place for their child, whatever their ability?”

Mrs May thanked Mrs Bruce for giving the example of Middlewich High School, before reaffirming the Government’s aims to increase the number of good school places.

Keith Simpson, head teacher at Middlewich High School, said: “We are delighted that our work here at Middlewich High School is now being recognised, not just locally by Fiona Bruce MP but nationally by Prime Minister Theresa May.

“We are very proud of what we do here and we believe very strongly that every child has the right to a good education, regardless of circumstances.

“As the lead school in east Cheshire running the Emotionally Healthy Schools Project, we believe passionately that all children have the ability to overcome obstacles, deal with challenge and build a resilience to face an ever-changing world.”

According to Public Health England, in an average class of 30 15-year-old pupils, three could have emotional issues, 10 are likely to have witnessed a family breakdown, one could have experienced a family bereavement, and seven are likely to have been bullied.
