MIDDLEWICH will revert to a Middle Ages settlement next weekend, as a heritage event takes centre stage in town.

Middlewich Town Council, Middlewich Heritage Trust and local historian Allan Earl present ‘Venables at Middlewich’, taking place on Saturday, September 24 and making St Michaels and All Angels Church come alive with Norman re-enactors.

Visitors can relive the era of the Norman Conquest, explore who the Venables were and immerse themselves in living history with the help of re-enactment group Conquest.

Founded in the early 1990s, they are one of the most successful groups in the UK, and the leading society studying the Middle Ages period.

There will be displays, activities and tours free of charge at the church and its grounds, running from 10am until 3pm.

Kerry Fletcher, council heritage officer, said: “The event has a dual purpose in providing an atmospheric and fun educational day for all ages but also to raise awareness of the church restoration and the unique Venables screens.

“The latter needs conservation and will be placed into the main body of the church once completed. These are very unique to Middlewich and deserve to be seen and admired by all.”

In Wheelock Street, the Makers Market will also be in full swing during the same hours.
