THE 160th Middlewich Annual Show has been hailed a success by organisers, with a strong showing from show newcomers.

Middlewich Show Society put on the event at Middlewich Town Hall on Saturday, with exhibitions open to the public between 2pm and 4.30pm.

On display were arrangements of fruit, vegetables, cookers, floral arts and crafts, with various categories allowing for plenty of friendly competition.

Show Society Bill Walmsley, who came third in the men’s cake category, said: “It was great to see so many people enjoying the day with us.

“There were also many new exhibitors at this year’s show which is always a good sign for the future.”

The award for best newcomer, named after late show supporter Carl Ashley, was won by David Brayne while John Gorst won the most points in the show across the flowers, fruit and vegetable sections.

Jennifer Thompson won best exhibit for her tapestry, while awards were also presented to those taking part in the Middlewich in Bloom event.

Guests at the event included Middlewich MP Fiona Bruce, town mayor Cllr Pam Farrell, Show Society president Mary Buckles and Rose Queen Abbie Cooper.

Mrs Bruce said: “It was wonderful to see the Civic Hall full with so many entries and for this tradition going back 160 years to be maintained.

“It was particularly encouraging to see prizes won by young people and newcomers."

The Show, along with Middlewich in Bloom, is run by the Show Society committee made up of nine dedicated members.

The committee would also like to thank the advertisers for their support through the year in helping to ensure the event and tradition continues.
