A MIDDLEWICH woman has asked for help in tracking a lorry driver who flattened a hedge and reflective bollards when reversing down a narrow lane.

Despite several signs warning lorries of the low aqueduct along Nantwich Road, drivers often make it all the way to the bridge before realising they need to reverse and turn around.

The problem was recently highlighted in Guardian reader's letter, and now Julie McKay, who lives in Mill Lane, says finding her hedge damaged last Friday – with no sign of the driver – came as no real surprise.

The driver had backed up from the aqueduct and into Mill Lane, crushing the hedge before driving off towards St Michaels Way.

She said: “It’s too late by the time they see the flashing sign, which needs to be a lot further the other way.

“We are really worried about people’s safety because we are right on a bend, and they back up on the opposite side of the road with cars coming around it towards them.

“Somebody is going to get killed. I had moved my car on Friday but the hedge was pushed up against it.

“I could have been putting my eight-month-old baby in the car at that time and we could have been crushed – would the driver have stopped then?”

Julie shared pictures of the damage on Facebook, along with a post appealing for witnesses. Among the suggestions were clearer signs and car park-style height restrictions.

She said: "There must have been cars either side of the lorry when it was backing up. It will cost at least £400 or £500 to repair.

“We have reported it to the police. When they came to see me on Monday morning, they took a quick statement, and as they left there was a lorry trying to turn in a driveway!"

Guardian reader Alan Langley submitted a letter on the subject earlier this month, suggesting that sat-nav systems tell drivers that the road flows over the canal, not under it.
