A BUTCHER celebrating 25 years on Wheelock Street has shared one of the secrets to his success – the people of Middlewich.

Aidan Devaney, who runs AJ Devaney, moved into 45 Wheelock Street in August 1991, aged just 22.

A quarter of a century on, he is still thriving and says residents have helped him through what has been a bumpy ride.

Aidan said: “I had been working in Birtwistles in Northwich, so opening my own shop seemed a normal way to go.

“They were very good to me, but I thought the opportunity was there – this shop, that had been a butcher’s before, was available so I took the plunge.

“I thought local people would support us, being a Middlewich lad. It has been difficult over the years, but it was kept going and things come in cycles.

“I’m still enjoying it – I enjoy not dreading going into work, and meeting and talking to the Middlewich people. It’s about being sociable and giving a good product.

“That’s the defining thing, the Middlewich people. They are very special people.”

The butcher prides himself on a diverse, award-winning range of handmade sausages and burgers, which can be found at the monthly Maker’s Market.

Over the years, Aidan has risen to challenges by adapting, even dipping his toes into supplying for events such as weddings, barbecues and birthdays.

He explained: “The rise of the supermarket has had a big impact on the town, and it hurts the little man. We have had to diversify, like all businesses. You don’t do 25 years doing the same thing.

“We interact with the community and try to get out and talk to them. I’m not the boss, the boss is the customer and I tell the staff that. I’m just there to guide them along.”
