FORMER Middlewich First town and borough councillor Paul Edwards has stepped out of political retirement to contest the Cledford by-election.

Mr Edwards, who also served three terms as mayor during his 12 years on Middlewich Town Council, stepped down ahead of last year’s local elections.

He will now face Labour candidate Jonathan Parry for the seat, made vacant by Ukip councillor Alan Brookes’ departure earlier this year, in an election next month.

Mr Edwards said his reasoning for returning to politics was to challenge what he claims is " misinformation” distributed by the Labour party on social media.

Namely, he has challenged Labour claims that Middlewich First voted for 2,000 new homes, arguing that the homes are Middlewich’s government-given allocation to meet the country’s needs.

He said: “As part of the Independent Network, I have always signed up to the Bell Principles that are based upon truth, honesty and integrity.

"I am angry that other people feel they can do and say whatever they like without a care for the truth.

“I will stand to fight for the best for Cledford, the place I live.

“I have 12 years of experience on the council which means I can hit the ground running.

"I know how to work successfully with others at town and borough level for the benefit of Middlewich.”

Mr Edwards has said he will also focus on the bypass, transport, parks and play area, policing, schools, and listening to people’s priorities.

Labour members forced a by-election last month, before putting forward Mr Parry as a candidate. Mr Edwards joined the race before the July 22 deadline.

An election is scheduled to take place on Thursday, August 18.
