CHESHIRE Police and Crime Commissioner David Keane visited Middlewich last Tuesday, spending time at the town’s custody suite and also working with members of the Speed Watch team.

PCSO Dave Jinks showed the recently-elected PCC and Cllr Pam Farrell, town mayor, how to use the hand held speed guns, which measure the speed of cars and also captures images and video for evidential purposes.

The cameras have an in-built laser and are being rolled out across the county to tackle speeding.

Mr Keane said: “During my conversations with the public over my first few weeks in office the issue of road safety and speeding has been raised with me a number of times.

“The investment in new technology such as the new speed enforcement devices is another positive step to keeping people safe on the roads.

“The new device is a real benefit to officers and PSCOs tackling those who choose to flout the law when it comes to speeding. Speed limits are there for a very good reason, they are to help you and other road users get from ‘A to B’ safely.”

Police officers, PCSOs and special officers are being trained to use the devices, which PCSO Jinks demonstrated on Holmes Chapel Road in Middlewich.

The Middlewich Speed Watch team regularly take to the streets, and have sent out more than 200 letters to drivers caught speeding around the town.

There are also ‘Smiley SIDs’ positioned around Middlewich, which advise drivers of their speed and whether or not they are travelling too fast.

PCSO Dave Jinks said: “The rules of the road are there for a reason and this new piece of kit will help us to enhance the work we do to enforce speed limits within the county and support our commitment to making Cheshire’s roads safer.”
