A MIDDLEWICH barber has raised over £1000 for St Luke’s Hospice in Winsford after completing a 100km non-stop walk from London to Brighton.

Jennifer Snelson, who works at Tim’s Gents Hairshop in Hightown, finished the arduous walk in just over 27 hours, crossing the line just after midday on Sunday, May 29.

The money has been raised in memory of two of Jennifer’s friends, Liz Howarth and Jackie Edwards, who both passed away within the past 12 months after battling cancer.

Jennifer said: “With Liz and Jackie fighting cancer, I have read a bit more and been involved a bit more [with St Luke’s]. It is a nice local place and a nice charity.

“I had been to Paris in early April to run the marathon with Jackie’s daughter, and Jackie had come with us.”

Sadly, Jackie passed away on April 21, just over a month before the 100km walk, but Jennifer says the memory of her friends pushed her on.

She said: “I underestimated how difficult it would be. I thought it would be less cross country and it was a lot harder than what we thought.

“When morning came, we started getting fatigued and it was absolutely boiling. I have run three marathons but this was another level and by the end I couldn’t put one foot in front of the other.

“The end was just relief that I had made it. I honestly thought I wouldn’t make it to the end and I didn’t think my body would be able to carry me.”

Jennifer raised over £4000 in October last year when she ran the Dublin marathon, and says she wants to keep raising money for the hospice.

In July, she will trek for charity across Pen-y-Fan in the Brecon Beacons – the course used by the SAS to test new recruits.

She said: “There wasn’t really a target, but every year I want to keep raising money for St Luke’s. Trying to ask people to support you all the time, you have to be constantly finding something harder.”
