MIDDLEWICH marked its involvement in the English Civil War with the installation of a new battlefield marker in Victoria Square last weekend.

Unveiled on April 30 by mayor Cllr Ken Kingston, the marker is the product of a 12 month Civil War Project which included four fundraising Civil War lectures at the end of last year.

The permanent marker now serves as a reminder of the two Middlewich battles of 1643, where nearly 400 men died.

Town heritage development officer Kerry Fletcher said: "It was such a nice day and we got so much backing from everyone.

"We wanted a site where the public could come in and see what we have, and ask questions. We had a lot to do that day – we were on our feet all day.

"As you can see from the pictures, we had to have a lot of bling and it really was a great day."

Cllr Kingston was joined at the ceremony by one of last year's speakers, Bob Burgess, while local historian Allan Earl was also singled out for his huge contribution to the project in partnership with the English Civil War Society.

The marker was revealed as part of a larger 'Past and Present' exhibition, whereby details of the town's history were displayed to the public.

Kerry added: "My job is to try to uncover as much about Middlewich as possible and make it accessible.

"We want to try and help people to read up about the town and get a greater connection to the town they love.

"The marker is in and it is there. We also want to provide people with information through brochures and on our website - we are putting in an awful lot of work."

The unveiling also brought forward a number of donations and Middlewich memorabilia, which it is hoped will form the crux of future exhibitions.
