BUILDING work is set to start on Cheshire East Council’s borough-wide waste transfer site this month.

Cheshire East Council has secured a contract with Wates Construction for the construction and refurbishment of new and existing buildings on the site in Cledford Lane.

The work is set to go on for 10 months and will start on Monday, May 23.

Cllr Don Stockton, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for regeneration, said: “I am delighted for the residents of east Cheshire that construction can begin in the next few weeks.

“This project will put our residents first by maximising recycling efforts and reducing landfill to an absolute minimum.

“Residents local to the site will benefit from the fact that Cheshire East Council has chosen a construction partner that understands the vital role that local community involvement can have.”

As part of the arrangement with their partner Wates Construction, a liaison committee has already been created involving residents of Middlewich with aim to ensure that local people are fully involved in the project.

A dedicated community site cabin will be established, where a Wates staff member will be on hand to answer any queries people may have.

Over the next 10 months, there will also be local school visits and opportunities for young people to have work experience placements on site.

The hub aims to end the landfill disposal of black bin waste in the borough and provide a site for Ansa to run waste collection, recycling, parks and street cleansing services for Cheshire East Council.

The environmental hub will enable the council to increase its recycling, attain targets in waste collection and at the same time have wider economic benefits preserving existing employment through the relocation of jobs to Middlewich.

Cllr David Latham, Middlewich Town Council member and Action Against Ansa campaigner, said: “It was expected that as soon as the planning permission was granted and the judicial review was not allowed, we knew Cheshire East Council work would start as soon as possible.

“We are continuing the fight and it is far from over. We have plenty of other avenues to go down.”
