HIGHWAYS departments at both Cheshire councils have been slammed for an ‘appalling lack of road safety’ in Croxton Lane in Middlewich less than a week after a fatal crash.

Middlewich man, Christopher Stubbs, 65, died in a crash in Croxton Lane on April 8, and days after the incident, Middlewich ward member at Cheshire East Council, Cllr Mike Parsons has raised issues of the safety of the road.

Cllr Parsons wrote a letter the town council, advising that he would be continuing his efforts to get Cheshire East Council and Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) to address the issue.

Cllr Parsons said: “For more than 10 years now, I have been repeatedly urging Highways, both east and west, to recognise and remedy the appalling lack of road safety provision in Croxton Lane.

“Be it the road’s dangerously narrow river bridge, its open opportunity for speed, or its highly dangerous and totally inadequate junction with King Street, Croxton Lane has a proven history of being one of the most notoriously dangerous roads in the area.

“However, despite all the evidence and my constant calls for action, Highways have done nothing, seeming to believe, instead, that the balance of human versus monetary cost does not warrant the outlay which would be required for the necessary road safety improvements to be implemented at these points.”

At a Middlewich Town Council meeting on Monday, April 18, the council agreed to use Cllr Parsons’ letter as a template and write in support of him to both borough councils urging them to provide a solution.

Cllr David Williams, who proposed the motion, said: “Middlewich Town Council deeply regrets the fatal road collision in Croxton Lane, our thoughts and sympathies are with all concerned and their families. We call on Cheshire East and Cheshire West councils to urgently bring forward proposals to improve safety on the whole length of this dangerous road.”

Cheshire East Council and CWaC were not available for comment.
