MIDDLEWICH MP Fiona Bruce forced the Government to address China’s human rights during the highly publicised UK visit of president Xi Jinping.

Fiona asked an urgent question in the House of Commons and forced her peers to debate the issue.

Fiona said: “Given the announcement last week of billions of pounds of investment from China in the UK, is it not vital that we call for human rights and the rule of law to be promoted and protected in China?

“Not only is it important for China and therefore a moral imperative but it also surely in our own national interest.

“I recognise the significance of the business relationship with China but believe that human rights and the rule of law should be at the centre of this relationship.

“It’s right that if the UK wants to be a friend of China we should be a critical friend.”
