The last bank holiday until Christmas has been a washout for many parts of Britain.
Some places were drenched with an inch of rain as the long weekend came to a damp close.
Revellers at Notting Hill Carnival donned ponchos and clutched umbrellas as west London was hit by downpours.
MeteoGroup forecaster John Lee said: "It's been quite a wet morning.
"South-east England, East Anglia and large parts of the Midlands all had heavy rain.
"This evening will be dry for most with some sunshine but still a few showers dotted around."
The wettest place by 3pm was Mildenhall in Suffolk, which recorded 1in (25mm) of rain from 6am.
There is only set to be a slight improvement in conditions as millions of people head back to work on Tuesday.
"Into the next few days it's looking a bit less soggy but still some showers, mainly in the North," Mr Lee said.
"On Monday the best of the weather will be southern England and South Wales, which will be mostly dry and sunny.
"The temperatures won't be particularly impressive. We're looking at getting up to about 19C (66F) in the South but northern areas may not get up to 15C (59F)."
