MIDDLEWICH MP Fiona Bruce has given her support to residents objecting to plans to build a waste transfer depot in Middlewich.

Residents from around the town came together seven years ago to embark on a four-year long fight against a similar application to build a waste incinerator in Middlewich and at that time received the backing from the Congleton MP Fiona Bruce.

After the victory for the campaigners in 2012, Cheshire East Council is now planning to build a waste transfer depot in Cledford Lane and residents have been heard calling for that same support from Fiona Bruce MP.

Fiona has responded by giving her backing to the campaigners and has made her feelings known to the Cheshire East Council planning department ahead of the strategic planning meeting on Wednesday, September 23.

The MP sent a letter to the planning department as well as Cheshire East Council leader Michael Jones, who also gave his support to campaigners against the incinerator between 2008 and 2012.

Fiona’s letter stated: “You are aware of my shock at hearing of the council’s contractual commitment to purchase this site before any notification to myself as the local Member of Parliament, and before local residents had any meaningful opportunity to express their views and concerns about this.

“Residents are understandably extremely angry and disappointed at this situation since they have a great number of concerns about the proposed use of the site coming, as it does, after literally thousands of residents fought for several years against a proposed waste incinerator only a very short distance away.

“There have been several concerns raised with me by residents and I stand shoulder to shoulder with my constituents in objecting to this planning application.

“Middlewich postcodes were recently voted the fourth best in the country, a coup for the area indeed. Surely the council wants to support residents and build on, rather than detract from this excellent accolade?”
