A CHARITY shop in Middlewich has had its windows smashed in twice in five days and will now have to find the money for the repairs.

The Cancer Research UK shop on Wheelock Street was hit by vandals first on Monday, August 10 and then feared it may be being targeted when its remaining window was smashed on Saturday, August 15.

The windows to the shop are now boarded up but despite its current appearance the shop remains open.

Volunteers who give up their time to work in the shop are outraged and confused by the incidents which have left the charity shop with a hefty bill.

Angie McDonald, volunteer at the Cancer Research UK shop, said: “It’s happened twice in the space of a week. We had one window smashed on Monday, August 10, and the other one smashed on Saturday, August 15.

“It’s just damaging the charity because we are trying to make a profit to raise money for Cancer Research UK but now we have to find the money to pay for the windows to be fixed.

“One of the windows they smashed was in a position where they could’ve reached in. The manager doesn’t think anything is missing but it is possible they could have taken something.

“I can’t see why anyone would want to target a charity that helps people with cancer but to get our windows smashed one after the other like this you don’t know whether somebody is.”

Middlewich PCSO Dave Jinks said the police don’t believe the shop is being targeted for any reason but said recent reports show that criminals are not above targeting charities.

PCSO Jinks said: “If anybody seen or heard anything on the dates of both incidents then call the police on 101.

“I don’t think the shop is being targeted. It could have been any shop that got its window smashed and I think once one is smashed someone comes along and smashes the other.

“I think people should be aware though that it is not beneath criminals to steal from charities. We’ve had some cases recently of people attempting to steal charity pots from shops by coming in and saying they’re collecting them, so it does happen.”
