A SERIES of Civil War lectures will be held in Middlewich later this year in an attempt to raise money for a battlefield marker.

Following the success of the Civil War re-enactment in May, Middlewich Town Council have teamed up with the Battlefields Trust to bring four monthly lectures to Middlewich, held between September and December and looking at the important turning points of the Civil War in Cheshire.

The first talk, entitled ‘The Civil War in Cheshire and Middlewich’s Role’, is on Saturday, September 12, and will be delivered by Professor Malcolm Wanklyn, one of the country’s leading academic historians on the military aspects of the Civil War.

Kerry Fletcher, Heritage officer at Middlewich Town Council, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with the Battlefields Trust on this Lecture Series. Each of the four speakers is the best in their chosen field and it’s fantastic that they will be here in Middlewich to deliver the talks.”

The series of lectures have been organised to raise money for a Battlefield Marker to be placed in the vicinity of the 2nd battle’s engagement at the intersection of Lewin Street, Brooks Lane and Booth Lane.

The marker’s exact location is yet to be decided but the aim is for the monument to be a reminder and a tribute to the hundreds that died on that fateful day, December 26, 1643.

Kerry added: “Many of the Middlewich inhabitants lost their homes and livelihood’s, it was an important turning point in Middlewich history which has not received the recognition it deserves.

“We are hoping the talks will provide enough fund raising money for the marker. A very special thank you to the Battlefields Trust and the speakers for giving their time to our appeal.”

Each talk will be held at the Wych Centre on Civic Way, starting at 2.30pm, doors open at 2pm. Ticket prices are £7.50, £25 discounted price for booking all four talks, refreshments included. Tickets are now available from Middlewich Town Council in Lewin Street.
