MEMBERS of the public have united in force to fight against the plans for a borough-wide waste transfer site in Middlewich ‘for the good of the future’ of the town.

Plans made by Cheshire East Council to build a waste transfer site in Cledford Lane have been met with anger from both residents and councillors in Middlewich.

Middlewich Town Council voted against the plans last week and now residents have backed the decision with Cheshire East Council receiving more than 90 letters of objection against the planning application.

Residents had until Thursday, July 2, to submit any comments and 92 obliged with one Fairacre Drive resident, Stephanie Burton, simply stating: “This application must be rejected for the good of the future of Middlewich.”

The prospect of increased traffic and heavy goods vehicles travelling through the town on a daily basis is the main concern for residents.

Thomas Green, from Warmingham Lane, wrote: “The question of whether any of those proposing the site live in Middlewich has already been asked.

"I would ask if any of them have actually been to Middlewich? If they have, how can they think the roads in Middlewich are suitable for this number of Wagons and other vehicles frequently leaving and returning.”

As well as the 92 letters of objection, Middlewich Town councillor David Latham said his petition asking for the plans to be refused has around 2,000 signatures.

Cllr Latham said: “Although I was hoping for more letters of complaints there has been a positive response from the town. I think we have something in the region of 2,000 signatures on the petition as well so hopefully it will make a difference and they will listen to what people are saying.”

Despite the deadline for comments on the Cheshire East Council website having passed, planning officer Emma Williams, who is dealing with the application, is still accepting comments via email to planning@cheshireeast.gov.uk or via post to Cheshire East Council, PO Box 606, Municipal Buildings, Crewe, CW1 9HP.
