A MIDDLEWICH councillor at Cheshire East Council who has campaigned for a give-way system on Lewin Street for years says the temporary road works shows his system works.

Cllr Mike Parsons, Middlewich ward member, has been calling on action from the council’s Highways officers to bring in a one-lane give-way system at the bottom of Lewin Street to give extra protection to pedestrians.

The idea was sprouted due to the high number of HGV’s using the route and having to mount the narrow pavement to pass through.

After a HGV caused the cellar doors on the pavement outside the White Horse Pub to cave in after driving over the pavement, the hole left behind has been cordoned off and a temporary give-way system has been introduced on Lewin Street.

Now, Cllr Parsons is adamant that the temporary works shows the system is the solution and has written again to Highways at Cheshire East Council calling for the fixture to be made permanent.

Cllr Parson’s letter states: “As you know, I have been requesting action at this point for many years, only to be turned down at every request. Now we find, courtesy of the current necessary temporary system, that one of the main solutions which I have always put forward (i.e. Priority Give Way System) actually works!

"Testimony to this has come from traffic observations carried out and also passing comments made by both pedestrians and drivers alike.

“I would therefore respectfully ask that urgent attention now be given to finally putting an end to the totally unsafe, unacceptable and outdated highway facilities at this point by resolving to introduce a permanently controlled traffic system incorporating either traffic lights or a priority give-way system.

“This, as a result, would provide for the safe passage of pedestrians along a wider and protected
footpath and also prevent the continuation of vehicles (particularly HGVs) having to use the pavement and running over the cellar doors.”

Cllr Parsons letter comes after a survey was carried out by campaigners in Middlewich which showed that the majority of residents on Lewin Street thought it would be a good idea to make the give-way system permanent.
