THE woman who died in a crash in Middlewich on Saturday could have been spared by a simple sign according to a Middlewich councillor.

A 72-year-old woman from Sandbach, who was driving a Honda Civic, died on Booth Lane after a crash involving a Toyota Hilux and a HGV and a 20-year-old man from Middlewich has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

However, Cllr Mike Parsons, Middlewich ward member at Cheshire East Council claims that the woman’s life, and four others over the past three years, could have been spared with a speed sign.

Cllr Parsons said: “This is building up a terrible record. We’ve had numerous deaths, the young lad who lost both his legs, cars having to be lifted out of the canal, just because the money won’t be spent to go and put a sign up.

“Some poor copper somewhere has had to go and explain to somebody that their wife, mother or grandmother isn’t coming home and all because somebody sat behind a desk won’t spend the time or money to get it sorted. It sickens me.”

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call PC Tony Hayhurst on 101 quoting incident number 472 of the 16/05/15.
