MIDDLEWICH town crier Devlin Hobson made the headlines in the Bermuda Royal Gazette last week while competing in the International Town Crier Competition.
Devlin competed on behalf of Middlewich against 24 other town criers but despite falling short of claiming the prestigious crown, he still managed to promote the town in the island’s newspaper.
Devlin, who took over as town crier of Middlewich in September last year, performed the ‘Middlewich cry’ which tells people all about the town and its heritage, and also presented a gift from Middlewich to the mayor.
Devlin said: “I presented a small gift to the Mayor of Hamilton on behalf of Middlewich Town Council and the people of Middlewich. Which he was very grateful and thanked Middlewich for their generosity.”
Participants competed in crying competitions island-wide over three days between Wednesday, April 22, and Friday, April 24.
The judging criteria included appearance, bearing and confidence, clarity, content, dictation, inflection and sustained volume.
