THE Conservative Candidate for the Congleton constituency Fiona Bruce has claimed that the ambitious plans for Middlewich announced last week are down to her.

Last week Cheshire East Council announced to alter the route of the planned bypass to make way for a freight terminal as well as a ‘garden city’ on open countryside south of the town, and up to 2,000 new homes being built.

Fiona Bruce, who is standing in next week’s general election, told The Guardian that she has held fortnightly meetings with Cheshire East Council in an effort to secure commitment to improve the town and claims that it would not have happened without her.

Fiona said: “I have been holding fortnightly meetings with Cheshire East Council for a while to press home the need for much more support to Middlewich; for real commitment to the bypass; for road improvements to safety and congestion; for the reopening of the Middlewich Railway Station, and improvements for fountain field, not next year but now.

“I am delighted that there has been a statement made confirming they will bring the bypass forward. I have been keeping the town council involved at every stage so that their views have been represented.

“I am confident that this would not have happened without my intervention and I am not someone that makes statements that cannot be justified.”

Cheshire East Council leader Michael Jones said last week: “We want to create an environment where development will become a reality.

“To make this work we need to be positive, we need to take full advantage of government funding and we need to take as much value as we can from the sites we want to develop.”
