MIDDLEWICH could become home to a major freight terminal as part of Cheshire East Council’s vision to put Middlewich on the map.

The council, which this week announced it will take responsibility for the Midpoint bypass, plans to alter the proposed route to free up more land to accommodate the terminal and additional manufacturing.

There are also plans to create a ‘garden city’ on open countryside south of the town, with up to 2,000 new homes being built.

It is estimated that at least 3,000 new jobs would be created from the regeneration which council leader Michael Jones has called ‘a game-changer’ for the area.

The Guardian understands that talks have already been taking place between the council and a consortium of four landowners in the area.

“We want to create an environment where development will become a reality,” said Cllr Jones.

“To make this work we need to be positive, we need to take full advantage of government funding and we need to take as much value as we can from the sites we want to develop.”

The council’s vision to breathe new life into Middlewich also includes an enhanced marina and a pedestrian-friendly town centre plus new cycle routes, footpaths and free parking.

Cllr Jones has promised to consult with residents on the scheme.

In a letter to residents he said: "We will work together and we will consult with you. We want to preserve the salt flats and make them a visitor destination. We will free up the congested roads and we will listen to residents as we ensure that all development is what the majority support. There is scope for a new secondary school, if required, and a commitment to all 106 monies being spent locally.

"Middlewich, should be a major beneficiary of HS2 and the Conservatives, working with the Town Council will make this happen now. This is a seminal time for the town, a time for great hope and optimism but also a time to raise the expectations and with one voice to ensure a brighter future for the fine residents of Middlewich.

"Middlewich matters to Cheshire East. It is the heart of us and we need to ensure that it has a heart which is vibrant and strong."
