THE reopening of the Middlewich railway station has been made a high priority after a meeting between Middlewich First and Cheshire East Council.

Middlewich First candidates for next month’s local election, Simon McGrory, Mike Parsons and Bernice Walmsley, held a meeting with Cheshire East Council last week and claim an agreement was secured to prioritise the reopening of the station.

The agreement was made as part of the Crewe HS2 Hi Growth City Project.

Cllr McGrory said: "This is a significant step forward and credit must go to those involved in the rail campaign group who have never given up hope.

“Add this to the ongoing discussions that Middlewich First is having over the bypass and it's clear that perseverance and skilful negotiations can reap rewards."

At the same meeting an agreement was also made for a feasibility study to be undertaken to bring the plans to develop and renovate the Town Wharf to a conclusion.

Bernice Walmsley said: "Middlewich First and the town council have worked hard to get this project to where it is now, but we need external help to get over the final hurdles.

“Cheshire East Council has that expertise and recognises the importance of this historic building and its impact on its setting in the canal network at the heart of our town centre. We look forward to significant progress over the next few months."
