BOSSES in Middlewich were given vital advice on how to reduce the risk of fire during a recent safety event in the town.

Around 50 businesses were visited on March 26th with the focus on premises in Lewin Street and Wheelock Street, as well as industrial areas around the town.

During the process, which is a legal requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, company records were checked ensuring the premises fire risk assessment was up to date, emergency lighting was being checked on a regular basis and fire extinguishers were maintained.

The people responsible for keeping these records were also given fire alarm advice and told what they need to do if a fire alarm did go off in their premises.

Fire Protection staff spoke to business owners, highlighting the requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, and managers were given guidance on how to reduce the risk of fire to their premises.

Keith Brooks, head of protection, said: "We are committed to helping businesses protect themselves, their customers and their properties from fire and arson, all of which can have a devastating impact.

“This event was a way of engaging with people and passing on crucial safety messages. It is estimated that up to 80 per cent of businesses are seriously affected following a fire and many never recover at all.

"Simple measures can be taken which can significantly reduce the threat and we are committed to making businesses aware of what they are.”

Fire Authority member for Cheshire East, Cllr Bill Livesley also attended the event.
