MIDDLEWICH First councillor Mike Parsons has produced a report highlighting a long list of dangers on roads in Middlewich.

Cllr Parsons, who is a ward member for Middlewich at Cheshire East Council sent the report to the council’s highways officers after becoming disillusioned with years of campaigning for changes to the town’s roads.

The report, which his entitled ‘Middlewich – A town not fit for pedestrian purpose’ lists several dangers on roads within the town including Brooks Lane Bridge, Lewin Street, and St Anne’s Road.

Cllr Parsons said: “The report will go to the head of transport and highways services at Cheshire East Council and also to council leader Michael Jones.

“The idea came about because continually in the 12 years I have been a councillor I have been going on about the state of the roads in Middlewich and there was nothing else left to do.

“In a town of this size, with a very mixed balance of children, senior citizens, vulnerable and disabled within its community, it would be reasonable to expect more attention to have been given by the relevant authorities to the safeguarding of those to whom it has a duty of care.

“It has to be concluded, therefore, that there is clear evidence of a lack not only of safety provision for pedestrians in Middlewich, but, more disturbingly, an obvious undercurrent of determination to maintain such non-provision for whatever reason.”

Cheshire East Council responded to the report by saying they have money to spend on highways in the borough and are currently assessing Middlewich’s roads.

“Earlier this year, Cheshire East Highways secured an allocation of £54million to spend on the Borough’s highways.

“We are currently assessing the priorities for this programme of work.

“We are also carrying out a highways assessment in Middlewich and the scope of this work will cover many of the points raised by Cllr Parsons and much else besides.

“Cheshire East Council has already negotiated more than £4million in funding to finance the Midpoint-18 eastern bypass and we are working tirelessly to secure additional funding to ensure it goes ahead.”

The report is available to the public from Middlewich Town Council offices on Lewin Street.
