THE Middlewich community has been lauded for its efforts in coming to the aid of the pensioner who was trapped under a car on Wheelock Street.

Patricia Lewis, 72, is being treated at Wythenshawe Hospital for multiple injuries including a broken pelvis and broken shoulder after she was hit by a car and ended up trapped underneath it on Friday, March 20.

Shop owners and members of the public quickly responded and a group formed to lift the car off Patricia.

After a family member thanked everyone who helped out, including the emergency services, in last week’s Guardian, the faith in the Middlewich community spirit has been restored for many.

Samantha Moss, Middlewich resident and Middlewich First candidate, said: “I walked up Wheelock Street seconds after the terrible accident last Friday, and yes it was terrible but what struck me afterwards was how the community rallied around.

“Shop owners, workmen and people on the street helped remove the car from the old lady, someone directed traffic, a builder moved all the broken fence posts out of public harm, and local businesses brought blankets and compassion to the elderly couple and even the driver, he was not hounded.

“Everyone worked together to do their best in the situation. Well done Middlewich. It's easy to moan about our town at times but when it really counted you proved what community spirit is all about.”

Middlewich Town Council clerk Jonathan Williams said he was not surprised to hear of the response from the public, saying it is exactly what Middlewich people are all about.

Jonathan Williams, Middlewich Town Council clerk, said: “I just think the response of people on the ground was what you would expect from Middlewich people, they look after each other.

“The immediate response was to not think of themselves but to respond to the dangerous situation and help the lady and her husband as well.”
