A MAJOR regeneration could be set to change the face of Middlewich with plans for a marina, new leisure facilities, new housing and schools, and the reopening of Middlewich Railway Station all on the drawing board.

The plans by Cheshire East Council, referred to as a ‘new vision’, are in their early stages and also include a ‘vibrant town centre and high street’, new roads linking Middlewich to other towns around mid-Cheshire as well as bus routes and cycle links.

More is expected to be announced in the coming months.

Cllr Michael Jones, leader of Cheshire East Council, has described the ambitious plans as a ‘once-in-a-generation opportunity for the town.

“Middlewich is a key town in Cheshire East and I am determined to meet the aspirations of the local members and the town council," he said.

“I foresee a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the town with new investment and jobs being created, all carried out in a way which protects the heritage and well-being of residents. It is no less than the people of Middlewich deserve.

“There is a real opportunity to capitalise on the growth of the borough and investment Cheshire East is geared up for.

“The potential north west Gateway hub station for HS2, in Crewe, provides the catalyst for real growth in Middlewich and for our vision to be delivered. The possibilities for regeneration are huge and we are working to turn them into reality.”

The council claims that the first step in the major revamp of Middlewich is to build the Ansa waste transfer site on Cledford Lane, at the former Ideal Standard site.

It also estimates that up to 3,000 jobs could be created over the next five years as a result of increased investment in Middlewich.

Middlewich Town Council is working with Cheshire East on its Neighbourhood Plan, which will help to outline the vision for the town.

Middlewich town mayor Cllr Paul Edwards said: “Middlewich Town Council is happy to work with Cheshire East and would like to see the council working towards some committed dates for projects such as the Middlewich Eastern Bypass, so as to give the residents of Middlewich re-assurance that the town is really moving forward.

“Middlewich Town Council will work tirelessly with Cheshire East to complete the local plan, which will help to generate job opportunities and a better environment for our residents.”
