THE work to extend the Lidl store in Middlewich has been criticised by residents for creating a ‘potentially life threatening situation’.

The huge amount of contractors that have been working on the store have been parking on pavements along Chester Road.

Angered residents have described the situation as bedlam, saying pedestrians are forced to walk into the road and ambulances have been blocked from getting past.

One resident, Stuart Newman, who lives on Chester Road, claims it is an accident waiting to happen.

Stuart said: “Since Monday, February 9, the contactors have been parked on a single yellow line the full length of Chester road, obstructing the pavements and causing massive traffic issues.

“Pedestrians including parents with push chairs have to walk into the road because of vehicles parked on the pavement, I have also seen ambulances delayed because cars cannot pull over to get out of the way even though sirens and lights are flashing. It is an accident waiting to happen.

“For three days it has been bedlam there doesn't seem to be any coordination on the site.”

Lidl has apologised for the situation and says its workers have been reminded to park responsibly.

A spokesperson from Lidl said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused whilst carrying out resurfacing works, which have temporarily restricted parking on site. Following concerns raised we have reminded our teams to ensure that they park responsibly, and can confirm that all vehicles will be back on site this Saturday.

“The extended and refurbished store is due to re-open on Thursday, February 26, and we would like to take the opportunity to thank residents and locals for their support and patience throughout the duration of the works.”
