A DISABLED woman has hit out against wheelchair access around Middlewich, claiming she is constantly forced into the path of oncoming traffic.

Victoria Perez, 36, who has lived on Ventnor Close in Middlewich since September last year, says she has been shocked with the poor wheelchair access since moving to the town.

Victoria said: “There are hardly any dropped kerbs so you can’t get up or down in a wheelchair and at a lot of places in town the pavement is tilted so much so that it pulls you into the road.

“I don’t know why they are tilted, whether it is for drainage or what but they just don’t think about wheelchair users at all.

“Last week my chair fell into the road because the pavement was so steep and a woman tried to help me back up but in the end I just had to carry on in the road and that happens all the time. It’s really dangerous and I get funny looks from people for being in the road but I have no choice.

“Also, in some places the pavements are so narrow that they just can’t fit a wheelchair on so again you go into the road.”

Victoria has now received the backing of Cllr Mike Parsons, who is the ward member for Middlewich at Cheshire East Council.

Cllr Parsons says he has also experienced the same problems in the town through his wife, who is a wheelchair user.

He said: “I also have issues with the slanted pavements in Middlewich particularly on Croxton Lane and I support everything Victoria is saying.

“The biggest issue my wife finds is the parked cars that take up the pavement and you can’t get past in a wheelchair.

“The issue needs to be addressed. I know Middlewich Vision were looking into it some time ago but I don’t know where they got with it.”
