MIDDLEWICH Labour candidate, Darren Price, has backed the decision to put a waste transfer site in Middlewich, but says the bypass must come first.

Cheshire East Council has purchased the land formerly used by Ideal Standard on Cledford Lane and has announced plans to turn it into a borough-wide waste site.

The decision to put the site in Middlewich has angered many residents but Darren Price, who will run as the Labour candidate for the Congleton constituency in this year’s general election, says that the site would have ‘clear benefits for the people of the town.’

Darren said: “Not only will the building of a new recycling centre be a good thing for our environment in the long-term, the proposed location on the former Ideal Standard factory on Cledford Lane will have some clear benefits for the people of the town.

“The development will of course bring much-needed jobs and in addition to this, the regeneration and re-use of a large derelict industrial site located on a key gateway into the town is a real positive.”

However, Darren says that despite the benefits of the site, it is essential that the Middlewich Eastern Bypass should be complete before the site is opened.

He added: “The Middlewich Eastern link road must be completed and fully operational before the new recycling centre is completed.

“The traffic situation in Middlewich is already critical and the addition of many more HGVs coming from all over the borough to the centre would be nothing short of catastrophic."
