MIDDLEWICH MP Fiona Bruce is leading a push to bring a new law to stop ‘tragic’ gender-selective abortions.

Fiona Bruce, who is the conservative MP for the Congleton constituency, introduced a Bill in the House of Commons and gave a speech addressing the issue of women choosing whether or not to abort their baby on its gender.

The British Medical Association argues that there may be cases where having a child of a particular gender may be an ethical justification for an abortion on the grounds that the sex of the child may severely affect the pregnant woman’s mental health.

However, Fiona Bruce disagrees and wants a law to be made to stop such decisions.

Fiona Bruce said in the Commons: “We know that sex-selective abortions are happening in the UK and little is being done to stop them.

“Lest anyone think that this is an issue that applies only in certain communities, they should consider the tragic fact that the words “family balancing” are heard with increasing frequency and understanding across the country.

“This Bill would be a step on the way to addressing this tragic and discriminatory practice and the first and most fundamental form of violence against women and girls. I commend it to the House.”

After the first reading by Fiona Bruce, the House of Commons voted with 181 Ayes and one Noes.

The Bill is set to be printed and read for a second time in the House of Commons on Friday 23 January, where the Members of Parliament will debate the Bill.
