A PHOTOGRAPH of schoolgirls wearing their homemade summer dresses is being shared with Guardian readers to see if it brings back memories.

Helen Powell, nee Clarke, was a pupil at Middlewich Junior School, in King Edward Street, between 1949 and 1953.

She found the picture, along with a class photograph, following the funeral of her former teacher Marion Field, nee Smallwood, who died in October aged 96.

Helen said: "When the girls were 11 in Class One, in 1953, we sewed summer dresses with Miss Smallwood.

"The photo is of eight girls in their homemade dresses.

"Some girls who sewed faster made boleros to match the dresses.

"I don't know what the boys did when we sewed."

She added: "I don't remember very much about being at junior school but I didn't like that dress.

"Now, when I look at it, it looks quite good.

"I did sew after I left school so perhaps it rubbed off."

Helen recognises Jennifer Foster, Barbara Dutton and Glenys Wrench on the photograph.

She went on to teach at the school in the 1960s.

"Middlewich Juniors had moved by the time I went back to teach," she said.

"Marian Smallwood, who taught me, was then the deputy head.

"There were two teachers there that were there when I was little and when they said 'keep to the left in the corridors' I would jump as well!"
