PUPILS at Byley Primary were taught about road safety as the winter season approaches and were given the chance to sit in a lorry cabin.

Trucking company Gist visited the school on Tuesday, October 14, as part of the National Child Road Safety Programme and left a lasting impression on the children.

Kay Walsh, Byley head teacher, said: “I think it really brought road safety more to the prominence for the children and even later on in the afternoon the children were still talking about it.

“The best thing was when they showed the stopping distance of a car and coned it out because I think that really brought it home.”

The visitors from Gist gave a full assembly to the school, showed them various demonstrations such as blind spots and stopping distances and let the pupils sit at the wheel in the lorry.

The school was also kitted out with high visibility jackets.
