THE Middlewich Great War Weekend took place at the weekend and organisers say it was a perfect way to remember the lives lost during the First World War and the town left behind.

The event, which took place over Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5, and saw huge crowds attracted to Middlewich to enjoy the entertainment and come together in remembrance of the Middlewich soldiers who fought in the First World War.

The weekend saw a host of activities across seven sites in the town including performances from pupils of various Middlewich schools in the Town Hall and Historic Boat Rally on the Trent and Mersey Canal.

Dave Thompson, events manager at Middlewich Town Council, said: “It went really well and we were very lucky with the weather.

“Everybody knows what happened in terms of battles but what we wanted to show was the town that was left behind and I think that it really worked well.

“It is important to do events like this because it is something that we must never forget and make sure it never happens again.”

The Great War Weekend was organised in remembrance alongside the 100 year anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The war lasted for four years between 1914 and 1918 and the council says it will do something similar each year to commemorate the centenary.

Dave added: “The remembrance goes on for four years so we will do something each year but at the minute we don’t know what it will be.

“It could be that we continue the Great War Weekend event or do something different but there will be something.”

The Royal British Legion Middlewich Branch also had stalls at the event and helped visitors find out about relatives that fought in the First World War.
