MIDDLEWICH Foodbank held its first collection at Tesco and was blown away by the amount of support it received from the community.

The Foodbank, which opened in May, held the collection at Tesco over three days between Thursday, July 3 and Saturday, July 5.

Volunteers from Cheshire Freemasons and several Middlewich churches, along with pupils from Middlewich High all helped with the collection.

Middlewich Foodbank volunteers are still counting the food donated but have so far counted 500kg.

Debi Williams, Foodbank manager, said: “This is our first collection so we have nothing to go on but we think 500kg is an incredible amount.

“I think it shows the support that the community has for the Foodbank, because we were blown away by the generosity of some people.”

“The volunteers who helped us were so enthusiastic, particularly the high school children, we really couldn’t operate without our volunteers.”

Middlewich Tesco will value all of the food collected over the three days and give a donation of 30 per cent in cash to the Foodbank.

Debi added: “We are really grateful for the donation from Tesco, because they haven’t benefited in any from us collecting at their store.”

“We can use the money now to get products we are low on like milk and baby products and we also want to buy equipment like computers for the Foodbank for people to apply for jobs.”
