THE closure of Middlewich’s largest road King Street has sparked traffic chaos among residents and commuters and there are fears the problem will only get worse.

It was announced last week that King Street was set to be closed for 11 weeks while work is done to replace gas main, but the resulting traffic around the town has caused chaos just days into the 11 week diversion.

More problems are set to be caused on the roads around the town with other roads in the area set for temporary closures during the 11 week period.

Disgruntled residents have taken to social media to voice their frustration with the lengthy road works.

Deborah Moses tweeted: “It's a nightmare...traffic backing up even out of rush hour. It needs traffic management.”

Carole Moore posted on Facebook: “It took us almost 40mins today to get to Northwich, passing through FIVE lots of roadworks!! Just daft.”

As well as the closure of King Street creating a lot traffic throughout the town, the situation was not helped this week when a section of Holmes Chapel Road between the Salt Cellar and the Fox and Hound pub was also closed for road works.

Holmes Chapel Road was closed from Saturday, June 29, until Tuesday, July 1, which left a lot people asking why the two closures could not have been arranged at separate times.

Mike Parsons, Cheshire East ward member for Middlewich, said: “It is a massive problem because there also closures coming on the A54 towards Winsford and on Nantwich Road too.”

“The problem we’re facing though is that these closures are Cheshire West and Chester closures and they assured us that the closures wouldn’t overlap but it seems that they do.”

I am alert to the situation and I have made the Town Council alert as well but with it being a Cheshire West and Chester issue, I can only keep talking to them.”

Despite the signs on King Street stating that the road is closed ahead, vehicles are continuing down it and being forced to turn around when reaching the closure, which is proving to be a tricky task for lorries.
