MIDDLEWICH night club Choklat has been forced to close after football fans fell through the club’s floor while watching England in the World Cup.

The night club and wine bar on Wheelock Street, which has been open since 2011, has now closed and will not reopen due to the incident.

Football fans gathered in the club to watch England play against Italy in their World Cup opener on Saturday, June 14.

However, when people celebrated England’s goal at around 11.40pm, it is understood the floor gave way underneath them.

Jason Tanfield, owner of Choklat and Mexican restaurant Chimichango’s which is next door, told the Guardian the bar would not be reopening.

“I can’t really comment on what happened on the night but all I can say is that Choklat will now have to be closed for good,” he said.

“We will not be reopening.”

A spokesman from the Cheshire Fire Service said: “One crew from Northwich and one from Winsford attended the incident at Choklat on Wheelock Street after we got the call at 11.50pm and were assisting police and the ambulance service on the scene.

“The floor in the bar had collapsed and six people had fallen through but only had very minor injuries.”

The building has a lot of history in the town having previously been the popular Taylor’s newsagents.

Dave Thompson, from Middlewich Town Council, said: “It’s a shame for all the people who go to Choklat regularly and for Jason who ran it.

“Another unit closing on the high street is really not good and especially with a shop with such a lot of history, it’s a real shame.”

The closure of Choklat will not affect Chimichango’s, which remains a popular eating spot in the town.
