A WIMBOLDSLEY pub will be hosting a sugar and sweet culinary feat on Saturday May 18 - all in the name of charity.

The Verdin Arms, on Nantwich Road, is inviting its regulars to enter a ‘Victoria Sponge’ competition and the winner of the best cake will win a Sunday lunch for two and wine.

Money raised from the competition will go to the Wingate Centre, in Wrenbury, which is home to The Wingate Special Children’s Trust.

Shaun Newall, landlord of the Verdin Arms, said: “It is a privilege to raise funds to support local charities, for those less fortunate than ourselves.

"We enjoy giving our time to good causes, it makes life so much richer and if it brings a little success to our operations at the local pub the better.”

Runners-up from the Victoria Sponge competition will receive a bag of ‘exceedingly good cakes’ baked by pastry chef Kayleigh Gater.

It costs £5 to enter and entries must be made by 1.30pm on the day.

Mike Gresty, member of the pub’s self-appointed committee, said: “We are just four locals who believe in the tradition of the local hostelry, raising money for good causes and along the way, creating enjoyment for ourselves and others.”

Cooking competitions have been a long-standing tradition at the pub and when Shaun became landlord, he decided to make it a more frequent occurrence.

With the committee’s help, Shaun has planned a number of fundraising events for the summer season, and each competition will have a different local charity as the benefactor.
