IT may have been reduced to crumbling bricks and mortar decades ago.

But many Middlewich residents will have been sad to see the derelict cottage in Croxton Lane knocked down.

Demolition work started on February 21 and now there is nothing left of the distinctive building which has continued to catch people’s eyes over the decades.

Many people have had a tale to tell in the past about the cottage but it is believed the home was lived in until 1963.

It is understood that a law came into force in that year which meant that the landowner had to pay the Government if the property was occupied, so the tenants were asked to leave.

Many people have tried to buy the property since but encountered various problems such as the price and contract.
